The Placement Assessment Video (formerly known as the General Audition Video)
Campers and Families - We have decided to extend the deadline. You have until April 15 to submit your Placement Assessment Videos.
Each camper must submit a Placement Assessment Video no later than April 15.
In 2019, campers had to audition to get into camp. This made people very unhappy. We are removing this requirement. There is NO audition requirement to get into camp, but you do need to follow these age and musical requirement guidelines.
However, every camper must submit a Placement Assessment Video by April 15. You will find the music here. Our musical staff uses this video to assess the playing level of the each musician and to group our campers in the best way.
If we receive your Placement Assessment Video and you are struggling to play the piece, we will contact you and ask you to wait a year. We play a lot of music at camp - all day long! We want everyone to be happy and you won't be happy if you are struggling.
You may also play an additional piece of your choosing AFTER the required Placement piece. (You must play the placement piece.) This is optional, but it gives you the opportunity to show what you can do with a familiar tune. Please state the name of the piece you are playing!
How to make your Placement Assessment videos:
Record your Placement Assessment Video however you would like, and then load your video to YouTube or Facebook. Most people use YouTube. This is preferred due to "friending" issues on Facebook.
If you have trouble uploading your video to YouTube, we have a step-by-step instruction sheet that explains how to do this in detail. Please do not use proprietary software and email your video to us. Please use YouTube.
Your YouTube video should not be set to "private." If it is, we cannot view it. If you do not want it to be public, please set it to "unlisted."
The video must include the Placement Assessment piece that everyone will use to audition. (It can also include the Ensemble audition piece. See below.)
If your child has considerable difficulty playing the Placement Assessment piece without help, please wait until next year to come to camp. When we receive this video, if our section leaders feel that your musician is not musically proficient enough to come to camp, we will contact him or her and ask him wait another year.
When you submit your audition videos, please use a couple of audition notes: Introduce yourself on your video. For instance, you might say, “I am Scotty Greenstreet. I am auditioning for the snare drum line.”
Make sure that we can hear your name clearly in the introduction on your video. If we can't, please record the video again. It is not good enough for your name to be in the email or on the YouTube submission, it needs to be stated on the video.
You must audition on your instrument. If you are a drummer, you cannot use drum pads.
If you are playing an optional piece, make sure you state the name of the piece.
Placement Assessment Video FAQ:
You do not need to memorize the music when you are making your video
Make sure we can see your hands in the video. Drummers, we want to see your drumming. Fifers, we want to see you play the fife. So, back up - but not too far!
If you are auditioning for the Ensemble Group, you must play both audition pieces and state that you wish to be considered for the ensemble group. (See below.)
Everyone must submit the Placement Assessment Video - even if you've been in the Ensemble Group or even if you feel that your child should be in a beginning group.
If you have a legitimate reason to submit a late video - for example, a broken arm or a serious medical concern - you must contact the Director, Tanya Morrisett, to obtain permission for a late video. firstname.lastname@example.org
General Audition Videos are due by April 15.
Ensemble Audition Videos are due by May 1st. Ensemble Auditions are optional. Please read below to find out more.
If you/your child turns in either video late, he/she will not be considered for the Ensemble Group.
Majors do not need to submit a video.
Ensemble Musicians If your child is a more mature person and a more experienced musician who would like an intense challenge at camp, please click here to see if they might want to audition to be an Ensemble Musician.
