Each camper must supply a General Audition Video no later than April 1st.
(If your child is an experienced, mature musician who wants an intense challenge at camp, he/she may also want to audition to be in the Ensemble Group. Ensemble Audition Videos, which are optional, are due on May 1st. Information is below.)
Our musical staff use the General Audition Video to assess the playing level of the each musician and to group our campers in the best way. Every camper must submit a General Audition video and it must be received by April 1st, earlier if possible.
Basic information about audition videos:
Record your audition video however you would like and then load your video to YouTube or Facebook. Most people use YouTube.
Your YouTube video should not be set to "private." If it is, we cannot view it. If you do not want it to be public, please set it to "unlisted."
The audition video must include the General Audition music piece that everyone will use to audition.
If your child has considerable difficulty playing the General Audition piece without help, please wait until next year to come to camp. When we receive this video, if our section leaders feel that your musician is not musically proficient enough to come to camp, we will have him or her wait another year. This applies to new campers only.
When you submit your audition videos, please use a couple of audition notes: Introduce yourself on your video. For instance, you might say, “I am Cap Corduan. I am auditioning for the bass drum line.”
Make sure that we can hear your name clearly in the introduction on your video. If we can't, please tape the video again. It is not good enough for your name to be in the email or on the YouTube submission, it needs to be stated ON the video.
You must audition on your instrument. If you are a drummer, you cannot use drum pads.
You do not need to memorize the music when you are auditioning.
Make sure we can see your hands in the video. Drummers, we want to see your drumming. Fifers, we want to see you play the fife. So, back up - but not too far!
If you are auditioning for the Ensemble Group, you must play both audition pieces and state that you wish to be considered for the ensemble group. (See below.)
Everyone must submit a General Audition Video. Parents, even if you think that your child will be in the beginner group, he or she must submit a General Audition Video.
If you have a legitimate reason to submit a late audition - for example, a broken arm - you must contact the Director, Cap Corduan, to obtain permission for a late video. Nobody but Cap can give permission to submit a late audition video. Your corps director cannot give permission to turn in a late video. Your corps's fife or drum instructor cannot give permission to turn in a late video. Not even one of the camp instructors can give permission to turn in a late video. If someone other than Cap gives you permission for a late audition video, please refer them to this paragraph. Being busy is not a legitimate reason to be late with your video. The due date being on Easter (for those who celebrate) is not a legitimate reason to be late with your video.
General Audition Videos are due by April 1st.
Ensemble Audition Videos are due by May 1st. Ensemble Auditions are optional. Please read below to find out more.
If you/your child turns in either video late, he/she will not be considered for the Ensemble Group.
Ensemble Musicians Those experienced musicians who want an intense musical challenge during camp may wish to consider auditioning to be an Ensemble musician. To do this, you must play the general audition piece and the required ensemble audition piece. You must also state on your online registration that you wish to be considered for the Ensemble musician program. Those chosen for the Ensemble musician program will perform the Ensemble piece, written for this year’s camp, at the Deep River Ancient Muster Tattoo on Friday night. The Ensemble musician spots will be limited to 4 bass drummers, 6-8 snare drummers, and around 12 fifers. Those chosen will be notified by Cap Corduan personally.
Parents, are you trying to determine if your child is ready to audition for the Ensemble group? Please be realistic about your child's abilities and help him or her make a good decision. There is always next year to audition! Being in the Ensemble is more than just musical ability; it is an intense experience. Our Ensemble group is typically older because we expect those in the group to have maturity and to lead the entire corps.
Here are some good guidelines:
Ensemble musicians should be able to sight read the ensemble music, and all audition music, without help.
Ensemble musicians should be able to play all the music independently.
Ensemble musicians should be able to stay focused for long periods of time as a productive member of the group.
Ensemble musicians should be able to accept constructive criticism about their playing.
Ensemble musicians will have excellent time-management skills and will submit their audition videos earlier than the deadline.
Ensemble musicians should be able to help others.
If this is difficult (or impossible) for your young musician to do this year, no worries! Audition to be an Ensemble musician next year - or the year after.
If those campers who are auditioning to be Ensemble Musicians do not submit their General Audition video by April 1st and their Ensemble audition videos by May 1st, they will not be considered for Ensemble musician placement.
